Dreaming In The Desert Retreat w/ “Body of Sound”

Community, Music, Movement Retreat, MAY 6-9TH, 2021

In May 2021, after the long Covid hibernation, I had the plesure to produce & be the art director of Dreaming In The Desert Retreat, together with the wonderful Alyssa DeCaro & Lisa Rueff. The retreat was held on the amazing Joshua Tree Festival Grounds in southern california, Joshua Tree Desert.

We celebrated on the daily:

Sunset ecstatic dance
Live musical performances by superchariot, Elena Shirin & yours truly.

FFmpeg: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Retro Video Filter

I’ve been missing working with FFmpeg, so when I encountered this interesting challenge on Reddit, I couldn’t resist giving it a try. I’m currently looking for a new project as an Audio/Video Software Engineer or Project Manager, and this challenge provided a refreshing break from interviews. The challenge was to create a retro video filter using only FFmpeg for a given video. Here are my results:

Background Story

I found this little beautiful instrument while shopping for a harmonium in Rishikesh, India. It tuned alright with a very interesting harmonic character. I really liked how it sounds and I thought it was a good buy.

Over on Reddit someone was having a little issue with this complex FFmpeg filter which I found very cool. I love this filter so I thought it should be documented somewhere. I offered some help fixing the issue and have this filter in my FFmpeg arsenal.

I was able to isolate the issue using a set of scripts I developed in 2014 called FFExtra. I found out that there was some issue with the input files, which prevented the filter from composing properly.

Almost every Shabbat Eve, my friends and I get together for a traditional Jewish service and a musical jam. I am so greatful to be living in a house surrounded by musicians.

On this random Friday eve we streamed jamming for 2.5 hours. Such a blessing in this crazy Covid-19 Times to be living in isolation with this amazing people!

What an amazing experience! The retreat was such a blast, just have a lot:

I have to admit, I organized and helped organize many events, but this event had some extreme unforeseen challenges. 3 Days before this event California announced a shelter-in-place order due to Covid 19. All Bay Area events were cancelled. The result was about ~8 cancellations by participants and my partner teacher to drop out as well - he was feeling under the weather and we would not take the risk with a new worldwide pandemic.

As a music composer, it is pretty rare to get recognition for a musical piece you write. Similar to, say architecture, it is pretty rare that a piece is even comes into fruition. Beyond the arrangement of a big band and finalizing every note in the piece, there are so many obstacles in the way to success. For that, I’m extreamly lucky to have a group of musician I work and play with regularly. A group that was willing to work on my very strange piece and make it into a product. A group that choose to take my work and produce a music video for it, while I was building a music studio in the Himalayas.

Back in 2015 Google announced its revolutionary new Photos service named Google Photos. The service offers unlimited data to host your photos. According to Wikipedia, there are over 1.2 billion photos are uploaded to the service every day and this estimation is likely to be an outdated.

Every new picture “backed up” on the cloud service, is been scanned, categorized and analyzed in the cloud using Google’s Machine Intelligence and Cloud Vision API.

Shy-Lee Tal is this one of these amazing artists you know will make big impact with their art. I met Shy-Lee Traveling in India and we spent literally weeks jamming, hanging and singing our favorite songs together.

This, beleive it or now, was one of the first recorded performances she did and I’m so happy I was able to contribute my Rytm Beats to it. Shout out to Shimon Ben-David on guitar, Nahdi on bass, Itzik on percussion and the rest of Kudli Beach friends 🏖

On my spring break of 2018, I was invited by Himalayan Academy of Music Technology in Mcleod Ganj (Dharamshala), India to give a lecture about ‘The Art of Saturation’. The lecture focused on one of my favorite analog instruments I was traveling with: Rytm and Heat.

Vrtigo was an incubation company in Samsung NEXT, the Samsung Research America division of startup innovation. Together with Ben Peirce and Erik Iverson, I lead frontend engineering of Vrtigo. We build one of the first VR analytics product on the market, while VR (or XR) was still at it’s very infant stage.

To say VR analytics is basically saying we were Measuring User Engagement in VR.

The following is a recorded jam straight out of my Elektron Rytm MKI machine. This machine is by far my fav. music instrument ever created. It’s amazing how with a couple of knobs turn you can trun a simple sample into a repeating musical phrase the listener can ’tune in’ to.

This is not intended to be a produced music material, just a jam with my sampler. There are certenly a lot of ruff edges “not pleasant” to listen to, but I like this little piece of memory.

Midburn is the Israeli version of Burning man. It is by far, the fastest growing Burning man ispired gathering around the world. With the organization’s quick growth came a huge challenge - The demand for tickets was so high that it will crash the organization frontend and backend systems as soon as tickets sell went online.

The system design was pretty basic for the young non-profit. Ticket sales were implemented in the user’s profile CMS which was Drupal at the time.
